NEW ‘DESTINATION WA’ HOST PHIL WALLEYSTACK'S FIRST EPISODE THIS SUNDAY

A dream role has come true for Western Australia’s Phil Walleystack.

Phil Walleystack says stepping into mainstream television with Destination WA is the fulfilment of a long-held goal — inspired decades ago by seeing Ernie Dingo on scree in the 90s.

Speaking about the new role, Walleystack said the opportunity had been years in the making, tracing it back to watching The Great Outdoors as a child.

“I think it was 1993 when I first saw Uncle Ernie Dingo on TV — and it stuck with me,” he said. The presenter said he became emotional when offered the role. “I broke down in tears of happiness… just yes, thank you,” he said.

Walleystack will debut this weekend, offering viewers a look at family-friendly destinations close to Perth.

Phil Walley Stack says the first episode is filmed in Belmont, and then he will be travelling to the South West for the next offering. “I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a whole lot of fun and great things to do around WA”, Walleystack said.

After nearly a decade working in children’s television, including on Aussie Bush Tales, the move into a national audience marks a shift in both style and reach.

Walleystack, already recognised for his success as a musician, author and dancer, has performed around the world and built a career blending contemporary styles with Aboriginal culture.

“To break into mainstream media now is a big plus for my career,” he said.

The travel program allows him to share real, on-the-ground experiences across Western Australia. “I’m talking more on a lived experience now… actually out there doing things on screen,” he said, instead of tucked away in a studio.

With new episodes airing weekly, filming will continue across the state. Mr Walley Stack says the show also offers audiences a chance to explore places closer to home. “People are looking for that close place to go to now… it’s a great show to learn more about our state,” he said. The presenter was also encouraged to be cast as a presenter for his talents and presentation, as much as for his cultural background.

Mr Walley Stack says he hopes the program resonates strongly with First Nations viewers. “My main thing is I just want all our mob to tune in… and see what can be done and where to go,” he said.

The new season of Destination WA airs Sundays at 5:30 pm on Channel 9.
