DOCO ON KIMBERLEY ELDER IN RUNNING FOR TOP AWARD

A documentary on a respected Derby Elder has been shortlisted for The Best Australian Short Film Competition.

Marlanie Haerewa and Jake Blackburn co-directed the film ‘The Tale of Mr Kimberley’.

It tells the story of Stolen Generation member Sam Lovell.

A Nyikina woman, Ms Haerewa says she wanted to give Mr Lovell a chance to tell his own story.

“it was just a privelige and an honour to be sitting there with him and to catch it all on camera,” she said.

“We let him really direct the short documentary. It was all led by him. If he was like, ‘we’ll take you guys here’, or ‘we’ll go here’, ‘we’ll get this shot here’, ‘we’ll get the sunset here’, or ‘go out on the marsh’, he led it all, and we just had the camera and followed.”

The winner of the Best Australian Short Film Competition will be announced later this month.
