Family Disappointed With Response By Police After E-Scooter Incident In Baynton

A Karratha mother has spoken out publicly after her 11-year-old son was involved in an incident with a car while riding his e-scooter at Baynton Park.

Police alleged there was a collision between a car and an e-scooter that the boy had just been riding.

The case sparked community discussion about safety and how police respond to incidents involving children.

Ms Zuranih told Ngaarda Media her son was playing with friends at a park on August 20 when the incident occurred. She says the experience has left her family shaken.

We rushed over and he was sort of crouched down on a rock, pulling his hair, rocking back and forth — just speechless” she said.

Karratha Police confirmed to Ngaarda Media that a 41-year-old man from Nickol has been charged with careless driving in relation to the matter.

 A police spokesperson said:

It is alleged there was a collision between the man’s vehicle and an e-scooter which was being ridden by an 11-year-old boy just prior to the collision. The boy received superficial injuries.”

Police said the matter has now been finalised with the man charged for careless driving and a loss of demerits.

Ms Zuranih told Ngaarda Media she was dissatisfied with the police communication following the incident.

I felt like we’ve just been shut out and haven’t even got a fair go. This is where the justice system failed us,” she said.

She shared her frustration online to raise awareness about the incident and to call for more support. She says WA Police told her to remove the post or she would risk being arrested for exposing the man's family and making threats.

Ngaarda Media has contacted the man involved, who declined to comment.

Ms Zuranih, mother of the boy involved.

Ms Zuranih felt the police’s response was insufficient and that her and her son's experience was being dismissed.

She shared “In this case, I feel like we’ve just been shut out and haven’t even got a fair go. This is where the justice system failed us. Just like many other cases…”

“... if an Aborginal man would have committed this crime, they would have been arrested the night. They would have been locked up… left in their jail cell, remanded… until their courts date. Who knows how long that could have been”, she said.

Ms Zuranih says the turmoil of this case has impacted her and her family deeply and for her, speaking out was the only option she felt she had left to protect her child.

She passionately said “If we’re not going to have any support… or help from anyone, then why not go to the media and expose this whole case? Why not, you know, bring it out and maybe someone will hear our voice. I don’t stand for racism, bullying, or anything like that.”
