Deputy Mayor of Alice Springs, Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has won preselection for the top spot on the Country Liberal Party’s Northern Territory Senate ticket, defeating incumbent CLP Senator Sam McMahon.

Speaking on Ngaarda Breakfast while Alice Springs was in lockdown due to a Coronavirus Outbreak, Mrs Price said “I do know now, there's huge expectations. So I've got to make sure that I do a good job when I'm in there, but I'll tell you I'm certainly not lacking in terms of my passion to to get in there and get the job done and and talk about some of the issues that are going on particularly in remote community and talk about them in a very honest and frank sort of way so that we can resolve some of those issues going forward.”

As the Northern Territory elects just 2 senators to the Federal Parliament, Mrs Price’s election as Senator is almost assured when the next Federal Election is held.

Mrs Price admitted dirty politics is still a factor in pre-selection battles, sympathising with Senator McMahon who was the subject of an alleged smear campaign to unseat her as.

“…unfortunately. this is it is all it's all part and parcel of politics. And you know, I mean, I've I know it's horrible feeling when you're that person being targeted. I mean, I've certainly been targeted for many years by my detractors because there's sorts of things that I stand for and you know, it comes with the with the territory when you stand up and you're a public figure and I don't think we'll ever get rid of it in politics and you certainly have to develop a thick skin to be able to endure it. Unfortunately…”
