Recognition puts Pilbara rugby league on the national stage
The Karratha Kangaroos Junior Rugby League has been crowned Community Club of the Year in a national award recognising excellence across all codes.
The honour marks a milestone for the club, its families, and the wider Pilbara community.
“A Privilege” for the Club
Club President Josh Cruice said the award was an unexpected but welcome honour.
“You don’t do this sort of thing for any of the awards, but when you put in a nomination you just hope for the best,” he said.
“We’re trying to do the right thing for the community and all the boys and girls that play rugby league in Karratha. So, yeah, it’s a privilege.”
Building a Culture Kids Love
Head Coach Ryan Gilitan credited the club’s growth to the positive experience it provides for young players.
“Once the kids get down here, they really enjoy themselves,” he said.
“They keep coming back year after year and telling their friends — that’s how we keep growing.”
Players Proud of National Recognition
For the players, the award represents more than a trophy. Matilda Gilitan said the win could inspire the next generation.
“I feel like it’s a really good thing for the club. I think it’ll help us get a lot more players next year, extend the club further, and hopefully get more teams,” she said.
Elizabeth Rauwa said it was a significant achievement for a regional club.
“It’s a really good achievement, especially coming from a small town and getting recognised by the whole country. I think that’s a great experience.”
A Win for the Pilbara
The Karratha Kangaroos’ success has shone a spotlight on regional rugby league, demonstrating that strong community spirit and commitment can earn national respect, even from a small corner of the Pilbara.
