KARRATHA KIDS INVITED TO DREAM BIG WITH ‘SCULPTURES BY THE SALT’

Young people across Karratha and surrounding communities are being encouraged to put their imaginations to work in a new Sculptures by the Salt design competition.
The competition is inviting children and teenagers aged 5 to 17 to draw a sculpture they would like to see brought to life on the region’s iconic salt flats.

Competition organiser Brenton said the idea came from wanting to see more local creativity reflected around Karratha, while also exploring opportunities to create another tourism drawcard for the region.
“I think the creativity of kids is there. They just have amazing imaginations and they think outside the box,” he said.

Entries can be inspired by anything young people connect with — from the Pilbara landscape and local culture to sport, animals or completely imaginative creations.
Brenton said some early designs have already featured basketball and football, reflecting the importance of sport to many young people in the region.

The competition includes a prize for every individual age group from 5 through to 17, giving children the chance to compete against others their own age.
Brenton said he hopes some of the strongest designs could eventually be turned into real sculptures.
“Why don't we give kids a go? Why don't we get kids more involved with how things are designed around town and give kids a chance to speak?”
He encouraged young people not to worry about whether their drawing skills were good enough.
“You've got to be in it to win it. Get involved. Don't limit your imagination.”
