Karratha Senior High School will host its annual Science Fair this Thursday, coinciding with National Science Week, in a celebration of science and its role in everyday life.
Head of Science Dhiv Sri said the free community event, running from 5 to 8 p.m., will feature contributions from local primary schools, industry stakeholders, and community organisations.
“The idea is to celebrate the contribution of science to everyday lives as well as humanity,” he said.
“It’s not just within the science department — we’ve got primary schools and external stakeholders coming in to show the relevance of science in daily life.”
Participating schools include Baynton West and Peg’s Creek primary schools, while exhibitors will include Woodside, Yara, Headspace, Pilbara Kimberley University Centres, and Rio Tinto.
Activities will range from drone demonstrations and rocket launches to hands-on science experiments such as making slime, sherbet, and “elephant toothpaste.”
The Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation will also present an Indigenous perspective on science, including a rock art monitoring program and other cultural projects.
Mr Sri said the Science Fair serves to connect the school with the wider community while inspiring students to consider science-related careers.
“We’ve had students who volunteered at past fairs go on to study engineering or medicine at universities in Western Australia and Melbourne,”
Interactive sessions will be scheduled throughout the evening, with announcements encouraging attendees to join timed activities and demonstrations.
The event will also highlight the importance of STEM skills, including teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving, in the context of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
He encouraged the entire community to attend.
“Come, bring your friends, it doesn’t matter if you’re in secondary school, primary school, or just part of the community,” he said.
“It’s free, and we’ve got food and coffee vans as well. We always look forward to seeing the community come in and be part of it.”
This year’s Science Fair marks Sri’s fourth as Head of Science and the school’s eighth overall.
