Noongar-Yamatji woman and advocate for victims of crime Mechelle Turvey has been nominated for the 2024 Australian of the Year Award for Western Australia.

This week marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Ms Turvey’s son, Cassius, who was allegedly murdered while walking home from school.

In the wake of the tragedy, Ms Turvey called for proper treatment of victims of crime and their families.

This year, she has delivered training for WA Police on dealing with victims of crime.

Ms Turvey said her advocacy comes from the heart.

“I do what I do because I’m passionate about people,” she said.

“I don’t believe in prizes and awards really, but I have to get used to this recognition thing.”
