MURUJUGA NOMINATION DELAYED AS PERDAMAN CONSTRUCTION RAMPS UP

Warning: Some viewers may find the below footage distressing.

A United Nations agency has knocked back the federal government’s nomination for Murujuga to become a World-Heritage listed site.

The nomination was made in January, in the hope the Pilbara site could be listed in 2024.

Murujuga is home to more than a million rock engravings, some more than 40,000 years old.

UNESCO knocked back the application because mapping issues made it invalid.

It is understood the government plans to resubmit a revised application.

The delay means the area may not have the opportunity to be listed until 2025.

Heavy industry, including Woodside’s Burrup Hub, sits on top of the Murujuga cultural landscape.

Last week, Ngaarda Media captured footage showing construction work underway at Murujuga for the Perdaman urea fertiliser plant.

Three rock art sites were relocated earlier this year to make way for the Perdaman development, which is strongly opposed by some traditional owners.
