NEWMAN FORUM TO TACKLE ELDER ABUSE

Elder Abuse continues to be a major concern in the North West, ahead of a major forum to be held in Newman on Saturday September 24th.

Manager of the Newman Women’s Shelter Arina Aoina explained to Ngaarda Radio elder abuse can take many forms.

“…..there are all types of elder abuse.

You can have Financial abuse which is illegal and proper use of someone's else's money or assets.

You could have social abuses means like restricting their the elderly's social contact with others psychological sexual physical neglect.

There's different types of elder abuse and I don't think the community is where aware that you know, there's quite a huge range of you know, types of abuse and where you are in Newman.”

Mrs Aoina laments most elder abuse victims know their perpetrator.

“…they're suggesting that 73% of users are family members. They say that the highest the most common abuse is financial and that most of the perpetrators of abuse are likely to be adult children.

And abuses can be male or female.

And some of them Rick's factors are because of isolation, difficulty and managing money dependence on others in health issues and when you look at the indigenous people the risk factors, across the average of communities is poor social and emotional well-being as a result of actions of young people young the you know, the the children grandchildren and it's it's in again in indigenous communities Financial business most commonly reported and it's linked to such as change poverty substance abuse break down a strong family structures. I mean, there's lots of lots of things into generational grief and Trauma.

The forum will be held at MartuMili from 6pm on Saturday September 24th 2021, and is a family event with live band, music and drinks
