NULLAGINE’S NEW POOL OPENS AFTER YEARS OF COMMUNITY PUSH
BY MARLI RYAN
A major new community facility has officially opened in Nullagine, with locals gathering on Wednesday to celebrate the launch of the town’s long-awaited Aquatic Centre.
The multi-million-dollar project, located on Cooke Street, includes a four-lane 25-metre pool, a toddler pool, kiosk, ablutions, change rooms and shaded grassed areas. The Shire of East Pilbara says the works were completed on schedule.
A Project Years in the Making
Shire President Anthony Middleton said the opening marks the end of years of planning, negotiations and construction.
He said the final stage, including earthworks, bricklaying, concreting and the installation of pipework was finished in time for the community launch.
“This has been a long journey for Nullagine,” Mr Middleton said. “It’s something the community has been asking for, and we’re proud to deliver it.” he said.
Leadership and Local Advocacy
Palyuku leader Walter Stream played a key role in pushing for the project. He advocated for a swimming pool during early negotiations with mining companies, securing one of the first major funding commitments that helped get the project off the ground.
Mr Stream told Ngaarda Media the opening was a proud moment, but also bittersweet, reflecting on the long effort by local families who campaigned for better facilities in town.
“We fought hard to get it. A lot of people will come and swim in the pool because, like I said, it gets pretty hot around here.” he said.
A New Space for the Community
The Aquatic Centre is expected to become an important gathering place in the hot, remote community, offering a safe space for recreation, cooling off and social connection.
The Shire says the pool will support health and wellbeing, youth engagement and future community programs.
