Crowds pack out Pannawonica for a weekend of rodeo action

The Robe River Rodeo has wrapped up for another year after a huge weekend in Pannawonica, drawing strong crowds and showcasing some of the nation’s toughest riders.

Spectators turned out in force to watch competitors take on bulls and broncs, while families enjoyed Pilbara hospitality with food, entertainment, and activities beyond the main arena. Volunteers from across the region played a key role in keeping the remote event running smoothly.

Community pride and self-sufficiency

Robe River Rodeo president Marty Hall said the support highlighted just how much the rodeo means to the community.

“A one-of-a-kind event, as far as it being so remote. We’re 200 kilometres out of Karratha. So we need to be, I guess, really self-sufficient in what we do. So the set-up and the daily running of the rodeo,” he said.

Competition heats up with national talent

Among the standout competitors was two-time Australian bull riding champion Wade McCarthy, who said the level of competition lifts when interstate riders join the northern circuit.

“When the boys come over and the ladies come over, it raises the bar…”

Mr McCarthy entered three events this year but admitted the results didn’t go his way after managing only two seconds on the bull in Pannawonica.

“The goal is eight seconds… then you get judged.”

Skill over luck in the arena

Despite a tough ride, McCarthy said rodeo is not about luck but preparation.

“It’s not really luck… it’s more skill.”

He added that success comes down to consistent training and muscle memory, with little margin for error once the chute gate opens.
