Yaandina CEO says centre now seen as part of the community, not apart from it
The Turner River Rehabilitation Centre has celebrated a key anniversary, with staff, residents and leadership reflecting on the centre’s growth as a place of cultural healing and recovery.
Speaking at the event, Yaandina CEO Emma Dumbrell said the centre has evolved into a safe and supportive space where cultural leadership plays a central role in treatment and wellbeing.
“There was initially a lot of, I guess, uncertainty in the community about what we were and what we were for,” she said.
“I think now we've developed great collaborations in the community, and we work well with the community.”
She said stronger community engagement has helped shift perceptions.
“We have Elders come out and do yarning sessions and that's really turned things around,”
“We have worked really hard in the last three, four years to get the community coming out to Turner River so it's part of the community and not sitting out on the edge so isolated.”
Turner River continues to support people from across the Pilbara and other parts of Western Australia, offering rehabilitation that integrates clinical and cultural approaches to healing.
