YUNGNGORA OP SHOP OUTSIDE BROOME PROVIDES MUCH-NEEDED SUPPORT IN THE KIMBERLEY
In Yungngora, a remote Aboriginal community outside of Broome in the Kimberleys, a small op shop is making a big difference.
With no local stores and limited transport options, many residents rely on it for affordable clothing and household goods.
“It makes a difference because it's hard to go to the nearest town and most of us don't have vehicles,” says Trichelle Laurell, who runs the shop.
“So, op shop is a big help with clothing and everything, and community are really happy for us of doing an op shop.”
Trichelle started the shop just a few months ago, and it’s already grown into a key service for families in Yungngora.
Donations are welcome from anyone willing to contribute. But while goods keep coming in, one of the biggest problems now is managing the flow of parcels.
“It’s just getting way out of hand because of so many parcels,” she says. “I need some support to transporting this stuff out from the post office.”
The local mail service can’t keep up, and with no car of her own, Trichelle often has to collect the items herself—with her baby in tow.
Running the shop solo is tough. She’s not yet partnered with shelters or local services, but she’s open to it. For now, she’s calling for extra hands and local support.
“Yes, I am happy for anyone to help volunteer. You know, just help around.” From sorting clothes to helping with transport, any bit of help would ease the load.
“I have to do things on my own,” she says. “Just carting stuff with non-vehicle... it’s a bit difficult for me.”

She’s happy to arrange drop-offs or work out other ways to get goods in without overwhelming the post office. Donations of clothes, basic household items, and especially volunteer time are still needed.
As Trichelle puts it plainly: “More help would be that helpful from communities.”
