Carnarvon will be home to the first Gascoyne Aboriginal Women’s Policy Forum.

The forum will be hosted and facilitated by Gascoyne Aboriginal women, producing a report that will encompass actionable steps towards positive change.

One of these includes establishing a Gascoyne Aboriginal Women’s Council to represent the interest of Indigenous women in the region.

Speakers for the events include Ms. June Oscar, Hon. Linda Burney, Hon. Rosita Sahanna, and Senator Susan Lines.

AKO consultant and organiser Cherie Sibisado lives in Carnarvon and will be working to help deliver the forum.

Mrs. Sibisado organised the forum after her move to the Gascoyne and seeing the lack of leadership development available for Indigenous women in the region.

The key issues which will be addressed include parents and grandparents, health, youth crime, and employment.

She said the discussions will be robust.

The forum will be held on Monday, 11th & Tuesday, 12th October in Carnarvon at the Gwoonwardu Mia Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre.
