INFLUENCER CRITICISED OVER VIDEO TARGETING ABORIGINAL PEOPLE IN KARRATHA
An Australian social media influencer, Lauren Mitchell, is facing criticism after posting a video containing sweeping and derogatory claims about Aboriginal people living in the Pilbara town of Karratha.
In the video, Mitchell alleged that Aboriginal people receive free dental care, housing and other government-funded support without accountability, and claimed this was unfair to non-Indigenous Australians. She also made broad statements linking Aboriginal people to poor hygiene, substance abuse and damage to public housing.
The video circulated widely online and prompted backlash from viewers, community members and advocates, who described the remarks as racist, misleading and harmful.
Claims disputed
Community members say the comments reflect stereotypes rather than evidence and fail to recognise the broader social, health and housing challenges faced in regional and remote areas.
Cherylee Walker criticised the video, saying the claims crossed a line.
“She is entitled to her own opinions, but that’s absolutely disgusting,” Walker said. “If she’s game enough to speak up like that, then she should be game enough to hear the backlash that follows too.”
Response
Ngaarda Media has contacted Lauren Mitchell for comment. At the time of publication, no response had been received.
