FROM PURPLE PASSION TO WEDDING VOWS: PILBARA COUPLE MARRY AT THE MCG ON GRAND FINAL DAY

For most Fremantle Dockers supporters, reaching the AFL Grand Final is a dream come true. But for Pilbara couple Danni Bloomfield and Matt Abbott, the biggest day on the football calendar became something even more special, their wedding day!

After 15 years together, the Karratha couple exchanged vows outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, 26 September, just hours before heading inside to cheer on their beloved Dockers against the Brisbane Lions.

Speaking with Lynnese O'Donoghue on Ngaarda Radio Breakfast this morning, Danni shared the extraordinary story of how a surprise wedding planned for her 50th birthday in Geraldton turned into a nationally televised celebration surrounded by football fans.

The couple had originally intended to surprise family and friends with a wedding during Danni's milestone birthday celebrations.

But when Fremantle's chances of reaching the Grand Final began looking promising, they decided to change their plans.

With their chosen witnesses already planning to travel to Melbourne and their celebrant, longtime friend Luke, living near the MCG, everything began falling into place.

"So, we just did a pivot, and we booked flights to Melbourne, and then decided we would just do it on the MCG Gardens on the way into the game," Danni told Ngaarda Radio.

What they hadn't anticipated was the enormous media attention their wedding would attract.

After an interview with ABC Radio in Perth, the story quickly gained national attention.

By the time the couple exchanged vows, television cameras and reporters had gathered around the ceremony.

"We did not expect our vows to be live-streamed across Australia. Let's be clear on that," Danni laughed.

"As the wedding started, the cameras just came from everywhere. I've got photos of the media that was there. There would have been 30 or 40 cameras. It was crazy."

Despite the unexpected attention, the ceremony was a deeply personal moment, with their close friend Luke officiating after knowing Danni for more than 30 years.

"It was always going to be Luke that married us. It was never going to be anyone else," she said.

And while Danni admitted she had once supported the West Coast Eagles before Matt converted her to Fremantle, her loyalty to the Dockers is now firmly established.

"I think I'll always love football and love West Australian football, but if Freo are playing, that's where the heart is."

The celebrations continued inside the MCG as Fremantle chased its first AFL premiership.

Despite leading late in the final quarter, the Dockers suffered a heartbreaking seven-point defeat to Brisbane, going down 96 to 89.

But Danni said the result could never take away from the magic of their wedding day.

"We were so happy. It was the most amazing day and we were so proud of the team. They showed up, they were competitive, it was quite incredible."

While the couple would have loved a Fremantle premiership to complete the celebrations, Danni said the moment that will stay with her forever had nothing to do with the football.

"Just being announced as husband and wife after 15 years ... to be Matt's wife was pretty damn special, and that's something I'll always remember."

For Danni and Matt, the Dockers may not have brought home the premiership cup, but they walked away from the MCG with something worth celebrating for a lifetime.
